Thanks HUAAN for sharing with us the news that Prof. XIONG Youlun is newly elected as a XueBu WeiYuag (KeXueYuan YuanSi). Since Prof. Xiong was my MSc thesis advisor and myself personally have benifited so much from Prof. Xiong's inspiration and enlightment, I feel obliged to say something about Prof. Xiong, and share it with HUSTers. Of course the following information are only based what I have gathered, and not even close to Prof. Xiong's actual profile.
XIONG Youlun, graduated from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering and Postgraduate School at Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China, in 1962 and 1966 respectively. From 1966 to 1980 he was employed by the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering (1) at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China. From 1980 to 1982 he was a visiting scholar in the Dept. of Control Engineering at Sheffield University, England, UK. In 1982 he returned to the Dept of Mechanical Engineering (1), HUST, where he is now a professor. He was a visiting professor at the Dept. of Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Salford, Salford, UK, and currently a visiting professor at the Hong Kong University of Sciences and Technology, Hong Kong. Prof. Xiong's general areas of research interests are robotics, system identification and control, manufacturing and automation, and precision measurement. His current research interests include robotic collision-free motion, grasp analysis, synthesis and planning, computational geometry, concurrent engineering, and intelligent control.
I gathered the above information from Prof. Xiong's publications appeared in the Robotica, Int'l Journal of Robotics and Automation, Robotics and Autonomous Systems, etc. I have left HUST in 1989 after graduation and have few contacts with Prof. Xiong since then. The information I provided may be outdated and far from an accurate description of Prof. Xiong. I understand that many people out there who have been taught by Prof. Xiong, or have worked with him, can do far better job than I do.
Regards,
ZHONG Xiaolin

Thank you very much for your sharing with us the news that Prof. Xiong has been elected as a XUE BU WE YUAN.
Mr.Zhong Xiaolin has described the background of Prof. Xiong. Here I just provide some information as a supplement. I hope it can make you know Prof.Xiong better.
Maybe there are not many people knew Prof.Xiong. This fact just reflected the characteristic of Prof. Xiong---working silently and concentrating on the academic research without pursuading fame and position.
I just want to mention that he has already published more than 70 papers and written 4 books. Most of them published in the famous local and international journals.
Prof Xiong has returned from HONG KONG to HUST. He is now a professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering, directing a batch of Ph.D and Msc candidates.
Thank you very much.
Huang Loulin
P.S: I was a Msc student directed by Prof.Xiong(1985--1988) and was a member of his research group (1988--1993).
